SanDisk today announced they're releasing a 32GB, 1.8-inch solid state drive (SSD) as a drop-in replacement for the standard mechanical hard disk drive. The drive will be costly, SanDisk said it will cost $600 more than a regular hard drive -- meaning about $800 - $1,000. SanDisk will be demoing the drive and talking more about it at the CES show in Las Vegas next week.

For your consideration is a review of my recently acquired 14” Lenovo ThinkPad R60. The R60 comes in 14 or 15” screen sizes. It is designed to be a more wallet friendly business class notebook, but if you get all the options it can get quite expensive. The R60 lacks the rock star status of the T series ThinkPads even though they share a lot of parts. It's sort of the Rodney Dangerfield of the ThinkPad line – no respect. I think the R60 offers great value for someone on a tight budget who wants a well built and serviced notebook.

Intel currently does not produce their low voltage and ultra low voltage processors in a way that they could be upgraded in the future -- the processors are soldered to the system board. As consumers we'd prefer to have the opportunity to upgrade a processor later on, and not have to replace the entire notebook just because we'd like a new processor.

Lenovo today has announced certification and support for Linux on two of its ThinkPad T60p configuration laptops. The T60p will not come preloaded with Linux, it will instead have a blank hard disk and DOS loaded. Dell has issued a major recall of 4.1 million batteries manufactured by Sony. Under rare conditions these batteries can overheat and cause risk of fire. However, many people that have purchased a Dell laptop in the past 2 years will be affected by this.

Report Shows Notebook Failures Still Too High

Gartner, an IT research firm, released a report today showing notebook annual failure rates (AFRs) have fallen over the past couple years, but not as much as they should have. Current AFRs for notebooks are 15% in year one, climbing to 22% in year 4 of ownership; compared to 20% and 28% for systems purchased in 2003-2004.
